Although in modern times we try to move away from the past as a backward and outdated concept, we are rooted in the past. The past is the starting point for any serious consideration of the present and the future.

Life of a woman was certainly difficult, since she was conditionally subordinated to the will of a man, absolutely. We cannot dispute that, but there were situations when women were making final decisions, especially… since not all men were as masculine as it may seem and like what they should have been according to the status of the manhood. And, I have never heard from my grandma that the father was stronger in making decisions than the mother or without her. But, the father was respected and you had to tell him, if he would call his daughter or someone else, then the answer was: as he says.
My grandma’s mother had a son who later… a priest and a professor and so on, who repeatedly said or even wrote somewhere that everything that he had learnt in his life he learned from his mother. Then these young priests asked him, what could she possibly had taught him when she did not know how to read or write. But, that is how it was. So, you see, his mother had a great influence on him, and on my grandma her father.

From the times of the Croatian national rulers, Dugi Otok has been settled by Croats who gradually assimilated the previously indigenous Illyrian and Roman population. Fleeing from the Ottomans in the 15th century, Dugi Otok was also settled by the people from the Zadar hinterland, from Bosnia, from Arbanasi in Zadar, from Italy, Slovenia, and even from Montenegro. They have all adapted to the island’s way of life, living of the fertile land, raising cattle and fishing.

Santa Marija, Insula Bozava, Insula Maqani, Insula Verbigni, Veli Otok, Isola di Sale, Insula Templi, Isola Grosa, Isola Lunga and Debeli Otok – this is the largest island of the Zadar archipelago, with the area of 119 square kilometres. It is located between the Molat group of islands in the northwest and the Kornati group of islands in the southeast. It is 45 kilometres long, with the narrowest point at Savar, 1.2 kilometres, and the widest point at Sali, 4.6 kilometres. In the southeast of Dugi Otok, Telašćica Nature Park is situated, with the area of 71 square kilometres, the historical birthplace of the Croatian fishing since the 10th century, adjacent to the fairy Kornati National Park.
